Oroville Area Chamber of Commerce - Event Information
Ishi Gathering & Seminar
The Ishi Seminar this year will focus on anthropological work in gaining knowledge of the life ways of California's aboriginal tribes, particularly the Yahim and the value of Ishi's contributions. It will include an overview of the study of California Indians before 1911, the anthropologists A.L. Kroeber, T.T. Waterman, and E.L. Gifford, and their work with Ishi, as well as later research which has added new insights and more substance to the Ishi Story.
After in-gathering over coffee and doughnuts, the sessions will start at 9:30.The day will be a rich immersion in the Ishi Story, for both newcomers and return attendees. Come and learn more about the science of anthropology and anthropologists' efforts to preserve information about near extinct cultures, late 19th century interaction between Ishi's people and white settlers, and why the Ishi story continues to intrigue both those who have just learned about it as well as those who have studied it for years. Several Anthropologists will provide perspective in the field and the role of anthropologists over the last 100 years.
