Saunter at Big Bald Rock
Ready for some epic views and incredible geology? Join Hiking For Good for a special field trip to Big Bald Rock near Oroville to explore the photo-worthy Big Bald Rock, saunter-style!
Big Bald Rock lies near the northern terminus of the Sierra Nevada mountain range in California. The rocky outcropping is visible from the Sacramento Valley near Oroville - a large, exposed portion of the Bald Rock Pluton. Part of the same geologic formation, the nearby Bald Rock Dome plunges over 2,000 feet toward the wild and scenic middle fork of the Feather River. A large swath of the Sacramento Valley is visible from most locations on Big Bald Rock, including the Coast Range and the Sutter Buttes. We’ll look for wildflowers, too! The trail is an easy walk with a scramble over rocks near the top.
This adventure is part of an ongoing monthly series designed for folks who, like John Muir, enjoy the act of taking it slow and “sauntering” in the outdoors. Held each month, Hiking For Good’s saunters are meant to immerse participants in the natural world to practice awareness and observation skills. Field guides, journals, and sketchbooks, cameras, and binoculars are welcome and encouraged. Connect with nature, identify flowers, get healthy exercise, and make new friends!
